Space Division


The Space and Microwave Division is devoted to the design, development and manufacture of microwave advanced equipment for ground and flight segments.

The Space and Microwave Division has a large experience in reception (LNAs, downconverters,...) and transmission (SSPAs), advanced design and test facilities, clean rooms and flight hardware manufacture and test.

Our technological capacity allows us to design state-of-the-art components and equipment by means of an extensive use of MMIC circuitry.

Since 1986, MIER COMUNICACIONES is collaborating with the European Space Agency (ESA) and other main organisations of the space sector, delivering, among other equipment, the microwaves power amplifiers for EMS-ITALSAT (European Mobile System) satellites, in operative since 1996, and ARTEMIS (Advanced Relay and Technology Mission), SKYPLEX RF and IF system, in orbit since February'98 on board of the Eutelsat Hot Bird 4, as well as the power amplifiers for LRPT system of METOP satellites. MIER COMUNICACIONES is also involved in scientific programmes such as PLANCK and SMOS, in the GALILEO programme, advanced on board processing systems, etc.

 
SOLID STATE POWER AMPLIFIERS
MIER COMUNICACIONES onboard SSPAs cover a wide range of frequency bands, from VHF to Ka-Band. All these products present a high efficiency and linearity over the input power range, making use of Solid State technology. MIC technology and fully integrated EPC allow to offer lightweight and compact size amplifiers.

EMS-ITALSAT (European Mobile System), launched in 1996, and ARTEMIS (Advanced Relay and Technology Mission), launched in 2001, are two of the programmes that make use of Ku band MIER COMUNICACIONES state-of-the-art SSPAs.

MIER COMUNICACIONES experience in VHF and UHF applications for TV broadcast, was used to develop the SSPAs for METOP satellites Payload Module, in the Low Rate Picture Transmission service.

ONBOARD RADIOFREQUENCY PROCESSING

MIER COMUNICACIONES used its experience in Ku-Band and VHF to develop a product able to perform onboard processing of digital signals using DVB standards.

The units flying on board Eutelsat Hot Bird 4 are part of the world's first DVB multiplexing system on board a satellite, enabling television, multimedia and Internet contents to be uplinked from different locations independently. MIER COMUNICACIONES is involved in the most advanced On Board Processing programmes (DOMINO, AMERHIS).

MMIC HYBRID COMPONENTS

MIER COMUNICACIONES is provided with all available technology to design, qualify and manufacture hermetically sealed MMIC hybrids and MCMs. Along its large experience, MIER COMUNICACIONES has developed a wide set of hybrids for space applications and synthesising different RF macro-functions. Some of these macro-functions are: RF and IF amplifiers at L, Ku and K-bands, mixers at L, Ku and K-bands, IF gain control for Ku amplifying chains,...

MIER COMUNICACIONES offers the possibility to customise the combination of several of these functions according to the customer needs.

  RECEIVING EQUIPMENT
MIER COMUNICACIONES has a large experience in receiving equipment, using MIC and MMIC technologies. This experience includes LNAs, frequency converters and complete receivers in the frequency range from UHF to Ka-band.

Two significant examples of this experience are:
  • A complete Ku-Band receiver for communications payloads, consisting of LNA, filter and Downconverter.
  • A complete receiver for L-Band interferometric radiometers, including an integrated antenna (MIRAS/SMOS)
